Online Exhibition 43
Try and Error

Statement by Yuta Segawa

The glaze has a completely different appearance depending on its thickness. If the glaze is too thick, it will melt and run off and stick to the shelves in the kiln.Normally, glazes are applied at a thickness that does not allow this to happen.

However, when thick glazes or multiple layers of glazes are applied, the glaze colours can be different and interesting. The aim of this exhibition was to pursue the fascination of glazing by layering the glaze more generously than usual, and to explore the shape of the pots in which the glaze does not flow easily.

Most of the pots are grooved and shaped to prevent the glaze from running off. Some still flowed and stuck to the shelves. But they were so beautiful that I explored different plinths to complete them as works of art. Tiles, marble, ceramics, etc.

Then, by chance, with the support of a neighbouring antique furniture repair workshop, I got a wooden plinth and tried it out, and the accidental nature of the antique furniture scraps resonated with the accidental nature of the glaze. This time, a group of those experimental pieces will also be presented on a wooden pedestal.

I hope you will enjoy the daily trial and error of the ceramic maker.
